Downriver Linked Greenways - Gap & Intersection Project
Downriver Linked Greenways is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help facilitate trail planning, development, marketing and programming of both land and water trails. Friends of the Detroit River serves as fiduciary of Downriver Linked Greenways.
Project Overview
This project advances a key segment of the Iron Belle Trail through Downriver, improving regional connectivity and expanding access to safe, non-motorized transportation across multiple communities.
Phase 1: Gap Construction & Intersection Improvements
Phase 1 focuses on closing existing gaps along a 25-mile segment of the trail and implementing targeted intersection improvements to enhance safety and continuity. Once complete, this segment will provide a seamless connection between the communities of Flat Rock, Rockwood, Brownstown Township, Gibraltar, Trenton, Grosse Ile, Riverview, Wyandotte, Ecorse, and River Rouge. Construction is underway and anticipated to be completed in 2026. OHM Advisors is serving as the construction engineering consultant, with Century Cement Company as the contractor.
Phase 2: West Jefferson Avenue Bike Lanes
Phase 2 builds on this momentum by introducing on-road bike lanes along West Jefferson Avenue through Ecorse, Wyandotte, Riverview, and Trenton. This phase is currently in the engineering and design stage, with construction anticipated to begin in 2027. OHM Advisors is leading design efforts, and the University of Michigan Program Evaluation Group is serving as the project’s evaluation consultant.
